Aubiose/Hemcore?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I've just been reading some posts and aubiose/hemcore have been mentioned. I've never heard of these before. When should you use them? I've had my girls for a week now and the run is on the lawn at the top of our garden. Where do you buy them from?

They are types of horse bedding for stables. Aubiose is French and Hemcore English.

I don't have my chooks yet so can't comment on how useful either of them are but people put it in the run, in the poo trays and nest box, it composts well and absorbs moisture and poo well I believe.

Personally I've bought 2 bales of Hemcore for when my run is complete, because I want to support an English product. I'm sure there will be plenty of people who can tell you more along very soon.

Either product is fine. They are hemp based horse bedding products.

I use Aubiose as that is what my local horse Tack shop sells (look up Equestrian supplies in Yellow pages). Aoubt £9 a bale.

If your eglu is on the lawn and you move it about regularily you will find this summer you may not need anything in the run (I didn't last Summer). But in Winter when ground is soggy and grass dissappears, Auboise or Hemcore is great an inch deep on the ground (kept dry with a run cover) is great. It just soaks up poos and I change it once a month.

For now, if you wanted to get a bale, then it is great in the nestbox or a handful sprinkled in the poo tray. But there are lots of other nestbox materials too.

So not an essential product, but definately one I would highly recomend as making my life easier.

It is sold by the bag not the bale, its £5 a bag, I use a bag and a half for a standard run. It looks like cat litter you spread it out and hydate it with hose or watering can, it puffs up and ends up like sand. IMHO it is much better than Aubiose or Hemcore (which STINKS if it gets wet) much much less smell and lasts nearly 2 months in the run before I need to change it (3 chooks).

I have used Hemcore up till now and have been really pleased with it but after paying £7.50 when I started out last September, the price is now over £12  . My supplier says they will no longer be stocking it so I'm planning on trying Easibed.

I agree, you do have to keep it dry but I use corrugated plastic sheeting which works a treat.

Whoops sorry you can get all these beddings from Equestrian/farm shops. nearest one to Camberley probably Rokers. I get my Aquamax by the pallet from a supplier (I've been using it for horses for ages, dunno why I didnt try it before) but if you google it you will easily find an outlet. Woodipec is similar to Aquamax.

Hi Rhapsody

Sorry mods as rather off topic as not about chooks ..but can I ask how you get on with this for the horses? After using the hemcore for the hens I am now thinking of changing the horses from shavings to something more effective for their rubber floored stables.. do you find this better than a hemp product?
