SLK69
Not for eating before you worry - But Pesky chicken was a bit low for the last week and after losing Precious Chicken a few weeks ago I was worried about her - she seemed so listless and was hiding more than usual - but after a week of pro-biotics and chicken spice she has fully recovered - but she seems to have lost some weight and she was never the chunkiest of chooks to start with - Is there some high calorie chicken snack I could give her. She is not that fussed about food really, as I have brought her indoors for porridge that she has ignored - I would like a bit of meat on her bones before winter. She is my favourite chook (but don't tell the others) and I want to make sure she is strong and healthy before the cold scottish weather comes in. They were only rescued at the end of March and I'm not sure any of them are their optimum selfs yet. Any suggestions? Susie x
Egluntyne
Chick crumbs, tuna (rinsed, dolphin friendly) organic cat food. - They all help.
BeckyBoo
Really the pellets or mash you're feeding them is the best stuff as it's so balanced so if she's stuffing on treats at all try to stop that. We had an ex batt that NEVER fattened up, don't know why, she was rescued same time as the others and she just always looked like a rescue. Failing that, as Egluntine says cat food, tuna, chick crumb, or maybe she has worms, that would keep her weight low, you could try worming her Good luck, like the names btw, Pesky and Precious Mrs B
Scooby
Sorry to hear about Precious. Feel really sad about her, especially as we picked up our girls the same day. Have you tried making a porridge of mash/pellets using warm water? I spinkle a few raisins into it too to tempt them and they all dive in. Plus, they think they're getting a huge treat cos it's in their treat bowl
Olly
I have one really skinny chicken - she's always been skinnier than her sister, and since I put all four in together I do suspect that she doesn't get to the food as much as the others. However she lays every day and seems perfectly healthy in all other ways. I'd love to fatten her up, but unless I separate her out and feed her separately each day, I don't think she'll ever put on weight.
moomin
I give mine the pellet porridge every day. I started when they were little and have continued although they are big girlies now. They stuff it down, the bowl's almost always empty at the end of the day. You can mix a little bit of sweetcorn in and sprinkle a few mealies on the top! SLK69
Thanks - think will bring her in for some porridge with tuna - she is not a big foodie like the others, infact she is a bit of a loner - in an own choice sort of way as there is no bullying - Just a wee bit of beak slapping after Precious died and then Sooky chook tried to be top hen - but all settled quickly. Not sure I can face buying meal worms yeuk - will try her on dolphin friendly tuna as extra protein - they don't get treats every day so that's not the reason and the rest are pretty chunky - Brave chicken is the real foody and is a VERY healthy weight for going in to winter months Susie
