Chickaboo
I know this is probably more of a chicken clinic question, but anyway; I noticed yesterday that Phoebe had a lump/protusion on the back of her right leg. It looks quite similar to the sort of back toe they have obviously with no nail though. It doesn't look particuly out of place so was trying to think if she had always had it or if she had one on each leg and one has dropped off!! I'm confused, can anyone tell me if they have heard of this. She seems fine in herself.
Egluntyne
It will be a spur. Usually found on cockerels, but occasionally hens develop them. My Artemis Fowl sports a very impressive pair.....and lays eggs. Nothing to worry about.
ubereglu
At your funny hen Egluntine! All hens have a protruding scale where their spurs would have been. I know that mine do and it's surprisingly got slightly larger as they've grown up!
katieandnick
I was wondering about this too. Our two noisiest bokbokbok-ers (Dusty the ex-batt and Janice AKA the Famous Grouse) have these spur looking things on their legs too. I was wondering if they have a bit too much testosterone or whatever the chicken equivalent is!
Chickaboo
Wow, you learn something new everyday about chickens So its quite normal?? She is 2yrs old?
FruitandNutCake
My biggest, strongest and most aggressive ex-batt has very big spurs. She also has large earlobes, wattles and comb, and at first I did wonder if she was a cockerel. However she doesn't make a lot of noise!
