Mumpty
I'm a real quandry as to whether I should order Omlet chooks with my cube or get some other breeds from a breeder. I have been to a breeder and seen the ones I like, but was wondering whether to have Omlet girls as they are hardy, good egg layers etc. Do they have nice characters? Should I maybe get one of each from Omlet and the rest from the breeder? and if I got them all on the same day, would they mix well together or will there be nastiness sorting out the pecking order between Omlet girls and farm girls? I'd hopefully introduce them within a few hours of each other, is this still too late to put them in together on the same day or will I have to seperate them and gradually do it. I'm very undecided and don't know what to do. HELP.
Cinnamon
How many hens are you looking to have altogether? If,say, you want 4,then how about 2 Onlet girls & 2 from the breeder that you visited? So long as you get them all around the same sort of time,& they are of similar ages, you will be fine They may well be a bit of beakage, but that is normal & to be expected. A lot of us here started of with Omlet hens, but have since added different breeds from different sources.
Mumpty
Thanks Cinnamon, I was thinking of may two from Omlet and 4 from the breeder. Will the 4 bully the 2, do you have to introduce the same numbers?
Sandychick
I would have thought they would all be ok as long as none of them have chance to feel established before the others arrive. It wouldn't be much different to putting 6 omlet chickens in together. I had 2 omlet chickens and then introduced an Amber Star 5 days later.......it caused a few problems, so would definatly recommend them all arriving the same day. They would all need to be pretty much the same age as well. Mine was 14 weeks and the omlets were 2 or 3 week older - there is a big difference in size! spratly0
Have had my girls a month now, got 2 gingers and 2 pepperpots all from omlet and all arrived in the same pet carrier. There was some pecking to get the order straight, but only lasted about an hour. I wouldn't change my girls for anything they all have different characters and all are very very friendly, especially if you have a handful of raisins
Seagazer
I would get some from Omlet as my chickens are lovely but in an ideal world I would love to have some that layed different coloured eggs eg white, green and blue.
karlotta
I got one of each from Omlet and another 4 from a local breeder - i wanted them all to be identifiable at a glance! I put them all in together on the same day and they got on fine!
