quickcluck
I have some that need to be cut off now, can the girls have them to peck at? I assume that if they were charging around the garden they would help themselves, but thought I would just check..... My last question was about melon seeds and after much advice discovered that they lurve them!
jomaxsmith
They are a bit high in fat to let them have loads, I would ration them to a few seeds every now and again! My sunflowers are about 8 inches high and no sign of flowering yet - what's your secret? Jo

stoice
Oh quickcluck, I'm glad someone else has sunflowers. Was going to post this in self sufficient section but... This year is the first time the slugs didn't gobble them all up so they all flowered and are just 'going over'. Do you cut them, keeping them dry, for the seeds to develop or do you let them develop on the plant and take your chances against the wild birds? quickcluck
I tend to do a bit of both depending on whether they are in the way!! But this year as I have chooks thought they might like a look in, but maybe not if they are too high in fat...... will have to stick to melon seeds and sweetcorn
Chicken Licken
Mine only eat them if the seeds are peeled. On its own, they ignore the sunflower head
cluckbok
We have 2 sunflowers, only just budding at the moment. They are in pots outside but OH was wondering whether to plant them in the ground as he think they would do better. They are quite tall, the chooks wouldn't be able to eat the buds but I wonder whether they would destroy the leaves? Anyway else had experience of chooks eating sunflower leaves?
