mrsm_jones
I have a welsummer chick, and she / he is about 8 weeks old now. It has the markings of the picture of the welsummer hen on the Omlet website, but it has a comb and wattles bigger than any of the 3 other chicks (silkie, speckled sussex and cream legbar). My question is...being as it's colouring is that of a hen( esp her neck! ), is she a "she", or is there still chance for the colouring to darken up and for her to become a "he" I will be gutted is its a boy, as she is so lovely looking, but the breeder will take him back if its a boy. So, what do you think???
cluckbok
Egluntine may be able to help. She looks quite mature for only 8 weeks old, you can definately see a comb coming through there. Normally that's a sign if the comb comes through quicker than some of the others, so they say.
Electricbarbarella
her comb is bigger than some of my 19 week olds. although that could be the breed. will have a look at some pictures.
Egluntyne
Egluntine may be able to help. She looks quite mature All that money spent on Clarins wasted. Difficult to say. It certainly looks far more mature than my 8 week old girls. Can you check the hackle feathers? If they are pointy, then it's a boy I'm afraid. If they are round....it is a girl. WitchHazel
She looks very similar to my Welsummer ("Jasmine"), although I suspect yours is much older than 8 weeks. I had mine from 11 weeks, and at that age she didn't have a comb at all, just a pimple of two on her "nose". She's 18 and a half weeks now, and her comb only started appearing in the last few weeks. Here's a pic of Jasmine taken on 2nd AUgust (so she was 16 weeks) And here's a picture of her (she's the one in the background, of course). She was 14 weeks when this was taken Here she is at 12 weeks I know Sarah (Cinnamon) has a young Welsummer, she might be able to suply pics or advice. Hope that helps
mrsm_jones
Thanks everyone She looks very similar to my Welsummer ("Jasmine"), although I suspect yours is much older than 8 weeks. I know Sarah (Cinnamon) has a young Welsummer, she might be able to suply pics or advice. Hope that helps I hatched her/him myself, so I KNOW he/she's only 8 weeks! and therin lies the confusion....girly colouring, but boy's comb and wattles. I need to know if her/his colour is likely to change to boys colours, or if I have a very early developing lady!
mrsm_jones
Right.....I've just been out to check the pointy-ness of his / her hackled feathers...and I assume you mean "neck" right??? How pointy is "pointy"??
Egluntyne
Hackle feathers. Pointy is very pointy....rather like these below , which have been taken from an adult rooster (To make fishing flies)

MedusA
Using "Egluntine's guide to Hackle Feathers" it would appear that my two Araucanas (now aged 15 weeks) are definitely girls, which is brilliant news!
