Minnie the Moocher
I'm new to posting though I have been lurking for a long time. Things are going really well with my chooks. I love the variation in size, texture and colour of the eggs they lay, and it's so exciting when a real whopper comes along but yesterday one of the girls laid the most perfect tiny egg about the size of a quail's egg. It's dark brown and speckled and could be made of chocolate! My question is... are these common, and what's inside? Will there be a teeny tiny yolk? My daughter has said she would like it for breakfast, but it won't be that much of a meal! Edited to say: Guess I'll just crack it open and find out. Thanks for all the replies; I'm overwhelmed
Dinkychick
Hiya! Im looking forward to my first egg however small What did you find inside your teeny tiny egg? Was it chocolate hehe
Ain't Nobody Here
Welcome to the forum, Minnie . If you've not cracked it open yet, you should weigh it to see if you'd get on the Omlet Small Egg Leader Board . I think tiny eggs sometimes are all white & no yolk - let us know what yours is! jackiepoppies
Hi Minnie Welcome to the forum. I don't get this far down the page usually but I've been having a few sleepless nights Did you take a picture or weigh your teeny egg? How was it? Do come and join us on/in? the nesting box....you will be more than welcome. Jackiex
Hen Watch
I had a tiny egg only once (the size of a cadburys mini egg) right out of the blue in the middle of my 4 established hens laying routine. It was just egg white (no yolk). Never happended again.
Minnie the Moocher
Wow! no replies for weeks, then four come at once! Well, we cracked it open and inside was mostly white, but there was the tiniest yolk, completely out of proportion to the egg. It was extraordinary. The colour on the outside of the shell was very concentrated, much darker than usual - it really did look like chocolate. Shame to eat it really, but DD enjoyed it. Thanks for the welcome - hope you extend the welcome to a chook owner with a <> wooden hen house
Ain't Nobody Here
Oops, never noticed you'd posted it on 12 August . I'd have replied then if I'd spotted it! Once somebody replies then it bumps up the list and others notice too . And don't worry, we don't discriminate against non-eglu owners . As long as you have chickens, you're welcome here . Angels4
0Welcome to the forum from across the pond. Did you happen to get a picture of your teeny tiny egg? Here in the States polite people call those tiny eggs "wind eggs". People who a little more "free" with thier language call them "gas eggs", and then there are those that just call them what they are "f*rt eggs". You are REALLY going to enjoy this forum everybody is so friendly and helpful.
Minnie the Moocher
Thanks Angels Had heard them referred to as 'wind' eggs before. Didn't realise it was that kind of wind! Conjures up all kinds of images, and ruffles a few feathers, no doubt...

Minnie the Moocher
Hey Dinkychick, keeping my fingers crossed that your girls start laying soon. We were very surprised to discover one of our birds had laid in the box on the journey between the farm and their new home. The egg was photographed, hard boiled and quartered. My quarter was delicious!
Dinkychick
hey do you know how old yours were when they started? Mine are roughly 16weeks now we got them young to watch them grow up but the wait for eggs is torture I bet the first egg is tasty and a surprise by the sound of it! Minnie the Moocher
I think they were somewhere between 16 and 20 weeks. They are all fab layers. Edie, the Cream Legbar does not lay blue eggs though despite having lovely bluish earlobes. She has the most enormous floppy comb which falls to one side - very comical - and unequal pupils which make her look, well, a bit peculiar! They all have red (rather than pink) combs which is an indicator that the required hormonal changes have taken place that kick off the egg laying. Do yours still have pink combs? Not all of mine crouch either. I do have a pic of my CL somewhere - will search for it and put it in my signature if I can work out how to do it! Dinkychick
Our cream legbar [supposedly hmm] and our legbar x have both got lovely red combs and wattles and have had for about 3 weeks! Ones legs are getting yellower and her ear lobes have been bluey for about a week. This one calmed right down last week and we thought she maybe getting ready as she started shouting alot monday... that kept us looking in the nesting box lol but yesterday and today she is back to her flighty fighting self so i dunno. My chucks have scrawny necks at the mo... our cream legbar doesnt really look like yours hehe... im going to go take some more picture when it stops raining, will be interesting to see if anyone has changed their mind as to what they are! Your chucks are gorgeous! So shiney feathered and plump...and those beautiful fluffy knickers awwww. I cant wait for mine to fill out!
