the hopefulls
I've just been reading more items on this site and now i'm thinking (thats a first). . . . . . We have 2 gorgeous girls, (arrived last saturday) but i've read that 3 is better so do we need to think about getting another girl, are eglu's big enough for 3, and how long can we leave it before introducing a 3rd???(or is it already to late?) so many question i know, but we really want to get it right. moomin
I have the same problem. i have 2 girls who love each other dearly and i am worried about something happening to one of them. They have been together since April. Folks on her tho' will say it's best to introduce 2 new girlies The Eglu house is plenty big enough for three but the bigger the run you can give them the better. beach chick
I think the potential problem with 2 is that if 1 dies, the other is left alone - they do get lonely, and so you would probably then want 2 more. introducing 2 to 1 is more difficult because they could gang up on the existing individual. if you've had 2 for a short time, I would think about 2 more - IF you have the space to allow them either the eglu extension and or safe freeranging. there is excellent advice on here about introductions (egluntine will be along soon to post the link!). otherwise, just stick with the 2 until you've got the hang of the chicken business and can think about how to keep any new girls separate til they've integrated and you can be sure they are not going to hurt each other. The Brown Clan
We originally ordered 2 from omlet and after advice on here we added a third from another local supplier but on the same day, I think that its might be too late to introduce a single girl as she will be picked on by your 2 exsisting girls so 2 would be better ( but if you decide to add to your pair i would do it very slowly by having seperate temp night accom for new girl/s and also by dividing their run with garden canes or similar so that they can see each other but not peck ) I'm no expert though just what i have read on here, I'm sure someone with more experience will be able to advise you better and correct me if i'm wrong Edited to say : and she was beach chick must of been replying same time as me !!! Ain't Nobody Here
An eglu is certainly big enough for 3 hens, it's the run that's the issue. A run plus converter is fine, without converter would be a bit small. I don't know if it's too late to get another girl . Hope someone else does! Don't worry too much if you can't get a 3rd. Two is fine, and the chances are they'll live long happy lives anyway!
Sandychick
I think there are plenty of people who have 2 happy chickens. But if you wanted another one I think the sooner the better. I introduced an Amber Star (Willow) 5 days after the Omlet Chickens arrived. It did cause a lot of fuss between them for a few days! I let them free range together during the day and kept Willow seperate at night for the first 3 nights. They were fine after this but I may have been a bit lucky. If you did want to introduce another one, make sure you have seperate accommodion available to start with.I just fenced off an area in my shed. If you are happy with just the 2, I'm sure they will be fine
WitchHazel
Hi, and welcome. Another option is to wait until The Inevitable happens to one of your girls, and then get two new Girls at that point. It's not the size of the Eglu that's a potential issue for 4, it's the size of the run.
