can you stop a broody hen?

Recommended Posts

One of mine frequently goes broody and the only thing which snaps her out of it is a few days in solitary confinement (a puppy crate) plus regular dunking in cold water to lower body temperature.Far as i know-you cant prevent them from going broody, but if there is a magical cure to stop it i'd love to know!

This is what i put her in for several days.Elevated off ground so theres maximum airflow around her nether regions!

The free range egg woman at our farmers' market agreed with the above advice - isolate her, make her as cool, uncomfortable and draughty as can be and she'll snap out of it.

I'm a bit haphazard - we tend to just ride the phase out, but it does take 3 to 6 weeks!

As for preventing it - collect eggs promptly, but some hens (and some breeds) are just prone to it.
