Yolk on the outside of an egg?

Recommended Posts

We were away for 2 weeks and our teen babysitter looked after the girls for us, so i don't know what happened in the run up to all this.

On the day we returned, Ida looked very uncomfortable. She was squatting outside (rather than in the nest box as is her habit), looking like she was straining. her vent looked really sore. It looked as if there was goo (albumem?) coming out and I wondered if she'd broken an egg internally. However, the next day nothing seemed untoward.

Anyway, she then seemed brighter, laid enormous eggs (over 90g) for 4 days. I thought maybe the strain of such big eggs had hurt her, hence the red area around the vent.

She's always a scruffy looking hen, her feathers often broken at the rear because the Speckledy picks on her, but she's a decent amount of regrowth.

Today, her (85g) egg had what looked like yolk stuck to the outside. The shell was quite thin, although not soft. The skin above her vent is red and she's some red at the base of her feathers under her vent, although nowhere else. No sign of parasites, either. She's still active, alert and comes pelting down the garden when she ses me (hoping for treats, the greedy guts).

I've read the Chicken healthy section but can't see anything applicable and don't know whether I should worry. Any thoughts? She's a little trouper, such a friendly and funny hen and I want to do my best for her.

I've had all sorts of bizarre eggs - The worst was a chewing gummy blob on the end of a cord coming out a very thin shelled egg. totally gross, but we have exbatts and their good egg laying days are supposed to be over - I have no advice - just sharing my experience and the hens never seem that bothered by the dodgy eggs.
