toastedblue
the eggs in the incubator have started rocking one more than the other but they're definitely rocking they're due to hatch tomorrow evening, do you think they will last out that long or is it immanent ? this is so exciting, and I'm a grown man
craftyhunnypie
Hi - they may pip tonight (small hole appear) & start cutting round the shell. It can take anything from 1 hour to nearly a full day. I've had both in the past & also some that never pipped, even though they rocked. Monitor carefully how each egg progresses once pipped. Try your best not to intervene. It's hard, but best to leave nature take its course, unless the chick is really really nearly out of the shell. On hatching it will flop & you will think OMG it is dead / not right. This is perfectly normal - as it will be exhausted. Leave in the incubator to fluff up - then transfer to the brooder with the heat lamp set at about 35 degrees C. I always give my chicks a small teddy bear & a brand new dishcloth (fine knit) to cuddle into. Use a shallow drinker (jam jar lid) & dip the beaks of the chick, so they know where the water is. I do this regularly until I see them drink for themselves. They will eat at about 1 and a half to 2 days old, but provide a small try of chick crumb from the start. I pick some up & sprinkle near the chicks, to encourage them to peck. You must check your chicks upon hatching for clean bottoms & that all the yolk has been absorbed. Also check their belly buttons are clean! Check their ears, eyes, nostrils are clean & also look for any crooked toes. Don't hold them too tightly as they are very delicate until a few days old. They will sleep lots! They run round then stop & fall asleep on the spot. Their heads just flop! They grow so quick & change from fluff to feathers in just over a week! Enjoy them & best of luck! toastedblue
craftyhp... should we remove the large pieces of egg shell from the incubator once it's hatched ? the Brahma is almost out, after 14 hours labour, but the campine hasn't pipped yet thanks
craftyhunnypie
I took the shells out along with the chick once fluffed up. However, be very quick - as if the other egg hasn't pipped it may fluctuate the temperature & humidty! Very best of luck! Emma.x
toastedblue
thanks crafty we took the shell out as soon as it hatched because it was going nuts in the incubator so much so it was bumping the other egg the other egg still hasn't pipped, it's been 25 hours, and is barely moving so we're hoping it is just a late developer

toastedblue
unfortunately the Silver Campine didn't make it, it stopped wiggling last night and still wasn't moving this morning have just cracked the egg and it was fully grown but deformed, so didn't really stand a chance even if it had hatched
