frazzled
A week ago we moved our eglu onto paving slabs. Noticed a smell today so spent ages, going through the bedding picking out poo. Is there any easy way of doing this I've been using a rake to pull the bedding towards me - my knees won't take crawling in. Reading other posts, many seem to poo pick every day - do you all crawl in Enlightment appreciated
chicken crazy
I was just going to ask the same thing! I asked the other day and someone suggest raking which didnt work too well, then i tried putting easibed on top of the bark. All the little monkeys did was spent all day s"Ooops, word censored!"ing it into the bark and making it fly everywhere!!
Chicken Licken
The bark chips are a nightmare, they get wet and soggy and smell foul. If you have aubiose or hemcore then you should be able to rake out the poo and pick it up with a spade. It is a bit of a juggle but do- able. I did this until I added an extra chook and the run extension and now it is too long to reach fully into so I move the eglu and run every couple of week and then rake out whatever is underneath. To keep on top of smells and flies I have a squirty bottle thing with water and a couple of drops of citronella and tea tree oil in - the flies don't like it and it works a treat!! Hope this helps
Eggstatic!
Get stuck in there!!! Or send one of the kids in there for you, its just like sending them up the chimney!
chicken crazy
Thanks, I'm alittle confused it easibed the same as hemcore and aubiose?
frazzled
The kids love the chickens, but disappear when poo picking is mentioned Maybe we could swap kids
chicken crazy
There is only me to clean the poo as I live on my own, which always seems great but now I'm wondering if I can talk my boyfriend into moving in and poop cleaning!
Sandychick
I rake all the Auboise to the end of the run and then put it all through a garden seive - nice stuff into a trug, and poo in a bucket for the compost. It seperates all the poo bigger than 1cm from the Auboise. It looks lovely and clean when it's all raked back and only takes about 10 mins. I do this once or twice a week. Egluntyne
Blimey! I leave it and change it all about once a month. I clean the actual Eglus twice a week though.
Sandychick
Yes it probably is a bit OTT It just looks so nice when it's done though!
Tessa the Duchess
I rake all the Auboise to the end of the run and then put it all through a garden seive - nice stuff into a trug, and poo in a bucket for the compost. It seperates all the poo bigger than 1cm from the Auboise. It looks lovely and clean when it's all raked back and only takes about 10 mins. I do this once or twice a week. I have a large walk in run with Auboise in it. I also seive it all through once a week, end up with a bucket of poo and old corn cobs and cabbage leaves which goes on the compost. It does look nice when the cleaned Auboise is raked back. This way I find I can get away with renewing the Auboise about every 6/8 week:D Tessa
Jules.
Wow, another Omleteer handy tip re the garden sieve, guess I'll have to bob into Wilkinsons tomorrow & buy one I'm a bit of a slovenly hen mum- my girls have been on the same aubiose now for two weeks, & spent a whole week inside on it while we were on holiday. It still looks good, a bit darker than when it was first put down, & I will clean the lot out on another 2-3 weeks & put it on my flower beds. For those of you with eglus & runs, why not just drag the run to one side while you poo pick & then put it back again if you have the room either side of the run to do so? That's what I used to do when I had my eglu.

eggs
Thanks, I'm alittle confused it easibed the same as hemcore and aubiose? Aubiose and Hemcore are very similar (hemp products - should have a light watering when first put down) but Easibed is chopped wood (pallets I think ?). Hope this helps. Guest
There is only me to clean the poo as I live on my own, which always seems great but now I'm wondering if I can talk my boyfriend into moving in and poop cleaning! Hmm I wonder if that would work? 'Darling, I was thinking, maybe we should live together..... And then you can clean up the chicken poo!' I love the idea but..... frazzled
The sieve idea sounds brilliant. One more question though, I've never seen Aubiose/hemcore up close - no one seems to stock it around here - are Easibed bits the same size as Aubiose or would they be too big to go though the sieve
eggs
Easibed has slightly larger pieces that Aubiose and Hemcore. You should be able to get them from a horse feed merchant although they will probably not stock all three. I use Easibed for my horses and it is a very good product. Have also used Aubiose and Hemcore which were also very good but a bit more expensive.
