Lisa
Geraldine gave us a lovely brown egg on her first day with us. I know it was her as I watched her on the nest. It was so funny as Cleo and Dilly were peering into the eglu and Geraldine was definitely telling them to stay out till she had finished. They waited like excited teenagers and when she was ready she then let the other two in to have a look. This morning (day 3) I hear an announcement and went down to find egg number 2. This egg is a similar size (1st 54g, 2nd 52g) but is slightly paler and very lightly speckled. Geraldine did not announce her first egg and this morning Cleo was doing all the announcing. Cleo looks like she will be the next to start laying - could this be her first? Or might it be the change of food/environment on Geraldine? It probably is Geraldine's as there is only a slight change but as a newbie I am full of silly questions!! Sorry! Secondly, I have been putting an upturned ceramic flower pot on the nest at night as I read somewhere on the forum that people do this to avoid pooh in the nest and it was very messy after their first night in there. I was concerned that this might have prevented Geraldine laying yesterday. Her first egg was produced at 4pm day 1. Egg 2 was there by 8.45am day 3. We let them out at 7.30am and remove the flower pot then. Is this OK? Were they just settling down? I assume it is common for a chicken not to lay everyday when they start out. They are all 20 weeks old and when I collected them I was told that one of them was already laying. I know I am being over but I want them to be perfectly happy Lisa
Hen Watch
Not sure about your egg laying question. I guessed who laid 2nd and 3rd, never really found out. You could take the flower pot out of the nestbox at night once they have decided where to roost so the nestbox is free for the morning. They might stay put and not go in the box (or they might???), try it and see. My lot lay at all different times in the morning, but I did once let them out at 7am and found 3 eggs in the nestbox.
