dancing cloud
I have grown a small squash called Sweet Dumpling for the first time this year and don't know how to tell when it is ready for picking. Some of them have changed colour and lost their stripes, but the only reference I can find to them says to harvest in October. Has anyone out there grown these and are they ready now? Many thanks for all advice, from a very new-to-this veggie grower
ubereglu
Try finding a picture of one on the internet when it is ripe. Once it is you can cut it off leaving a long stem and then place it in a warm dry place for a few days and then move it somewhere colder. This allows the skin to harden up so it will keep for longer. chickencam
They are ripe when they change colour but as ubereglu said they do need to be left for the skins to harden if you want to keep them. If you want to use straight away it should be ready It is probably worth taking them off as soon as they are ripe this year because they will be prone to rotting with all the slugs and wet weather. ubereglu
Also, if you tap them they should sound hollow when they're ready.
