Fizzle Knit
My children just came in with Strummer shouting "Strummer's a boy - she's got a willy!" Her vent appeared to have turned itself inside out with big red protuberance sticking out. I gave it 5 mins while I checked on here to see for advice, then had a look at her and she seems to be back to normal. She has laid an egg today. Just wondered, what, apart from keeping my eye on her I need to be doing, if anything? Thank you!
Egluntyne
All you can do is keep an eye on her if it has gone back in. If it reappears, it might be a good idea to remove her from the other hens as they will find it irresistible and start pecking it.
Christian
If it does come out again, separate her as Egluntine says and make sure she has a break from egg laying for a week or two. Feed her s"Ooops, word censored!"s, corn, wheat or anything other than layers pellets/mash and hopefully she will rest her 'bits'. All the best
Fizzle Knit
Thanks for that both of you. She seems OK now but I think she (one of them did) laid a soft egg in the garden yesterday so I'm keeping an eye on her. One question - if her bits come out again should I pop them back in - I'd be worried about doing her damage.
Egluntyne
IF they don't go back in spontaneously.......yes, try to pop it back in. If it looks a bit mucky, I'd bathe it in tepid salt water and then with a gloved hnd, try to puch it back in. If it becomes very swollen some heamorrhoid ointment will shrink it. As Christian suggests, it would be a good idea to feed her a diet that will not proote laying for a few days, to let everything settle. buffie
Just to add a wash with warm water and tea tree, give the hen arnica and aconite. When you use your gloved finger pop some vaseline on it and move with the contractions of the muscles so it helps it stay put!
