is this normal?

Recommended Posts

Hi

we have had our girls since 30.08.08. They both laid an egg on the same day 9.09.08 and have laid an egg each, every day since.

Today Stottie (Amber Star) was in the Eglu laying and Pickle (Black Star) was screaching at the top of her voice. I ran outside and thought it was because she had been spooked by the dog next door, but even when i moved her she would not shut up. She only stopped when Stottie came out of the Eglu.

Does this mean she is telling us (and the whole world) that Stottie is laying? or could it be that she is missing her. (She does tend to look for her if she does not know where she is.)

She doesn't make this much noise when laying herself. I hope it was a one off as this screaching lasted half an hour. We don't want to upset the neighbours.

Any thoughts?

cheers

Linda

Tiki does exactly this when Koru is on the nest. I haven't come across this behaviour with any of my other chickens.

I remove Tiki so that she can't see Koru on the nest and she tends to quieten down a bit - might be worth a try. :!:

Unfortunately, Koru has the loudest post-egg-laying crow I have ever heard so it's never quiet here for long!

Oh.. that's funny.. MIne do exactly the same thing.. Not sure which one or if it's both though.

On the up side I know that there will be an egg when I go down for a look. Luckily for me neither of my chooks are early layers.. so it's only usually around 10 ish in the morning and they don't do it everyday!

None of my neighbours have complained.. But they are super loud when they get going.

I`ve been wondering about this actually.

Beauty is laying every day but Ginger has yet to start. Beauty goes on to the nest each morning about 10 and Ginger wanders in and out - apparently keeping her company or just being nosy. What if she decided to lay and Beauty or Beauty`s egg was already there? Do chickens share the space? Would she break Beauty`s egg - even accidentally?

Silly questions I know - just an ignorant new-chook-person me.

uif mine are both free ranging during the morning, one will look up and discover her mate isnlt there( becasue she is laying) ...she then goes mad!

and the the other will do it as well when she comes to lay. however, if they are both in the run they never make a noise when the other is laying.

i think it is becaue they lose sight of each other and panic...
