chook-a-dee
Hi, I have a silver sussex who was fine when she went to bed last night. However, this morning she was sitting i nthe entrance of the hutch. When I walked up the garden she came out but sat on the floor. I tried to move her and she stood, walked a little with a limp and then sat down again. I picked her up, checked her feet and along her bones and she seemed ok and didnt flinch at all. I isolated her in the hutch incase the others decided to pick on her (another sussex and two silkies). When I did this I opened her wings. On one side she was fine, let me do it. THen on the other she pulled her wing back. She also rolled away from this side when she sat down and is the side she extended her foot on when I picked her up. Shes alert and pecking at her feed and looks normal. Havent had chance to examine her poo yet. Does anyone have nay ideas on what this could be and what to do. The other chooks seem fine. Also, the others werent picking on her and if shes still like this tomorrow is it best to leave her with the others or isolate her in the hutch with food and water? I feed them layers pellets, mixed corn, vegies from the kitchen and garden and leave a dish of grit with oyster shell in their run. Up til now theres been pretty much two eggs a day (silkies havent laid yet). Any help very much appreciated! Thanks.
Gamebird
It's hard to say exactly what the problem might be. It could be that she has been a bit over zealous and sprained her leg which could take a couple of weeks or so to mend. Or maybe she has a calcium deficiency which is making her leg weak. Limestone flour mixed in with her layer pellets might do the trick. Unless she is being attacked by the others then I wouldn't isolate her because you then might have problems re-introducing her. Keep an eye on her and if she doesn't improve or gets worse then maybe a trip to the vets might be prudent.
chook-a-dee
Hi, Thanks for your advice. I got back home and she'd laid an egg. But was still sitting down. This morning when I checked on them she was in the hutch in almost the same place as last night. Though seems less alert and kind of more spread out with her chin resting on the edge of the nest box. I left her some food and water in pecking distance but she showed no interest. Will get some limestone flour this lunchtime and mix it in to feed but if shes not eating it... I've read on forums re people syringing food/asprin/water into their chooks mouths. Is this worth trying? The other chooks are still normall and dont seem to bother her; the silkies were hanging in the hutch with her when I checked on them this morning. Thanks for your help. Gamebird
She does sound a bit poorly. If she is not drinking she could get dehydrated. You could try syringing small amounts of water into her beak. Have you felt her crop? What does it feel like and how full is it?
Egluntyne
It think I'd be inclined to take her to the vet.
