Guest
Because I have a heart condition, every time I've had dental work done I've had to take antibiotics because you can actually get an infection in your heart via your gums and because of my condition, they've always been extra careful and ensured (in fact INSISTED) that I take antibiotics before any treatment. I'm talking 30 odd years here. I went to the dentist today and I need a couple of fillings so I asked for a prescription for antibiotics (as per usual) and was told they don't prescribe them for dental work any more FULL STOP. I expressed my concerns. If I got an infection in my heart then it could have very serious implications, I mean, it's not like getting the flu! Surely prevention is far better than cure in this case!!!??? I was told the ruling now is no antibiotics and that was that! I was given rather short shrift and am quite upset. I told the receptionist that I was worried and I heard her go into the back and say to the dentist "Mrs ****** is unhappy about you not prescribing antibiotics" I never said I was "unhappy" and she made it sound like I was complaining. I've been going to this particular practice for years and was rather upset that no-one could be bothered to take the time to reassure me or explain why I won't need antibiotics. After all, these are the people that for years have insisted I take them!? I'm really worried now, going to the dentist is bad enough but I'm terrified now! Is there anyone out there that can reassure me or shed any light on this sudden rule change?
susanbb
Would you be able to ask someone else, say for example your consultant to prescribe our antibiotics. Obviosley theyy would know your case and hopefully be a bit more compassionate.
jess
http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Publicationsandstatistics/Lettersandcirculars/Professionalletters/Chiefdentalofficerletters/DH_083679 Well I found this, not sure if it makes you feel any better though! Well techniques are always changing in health care, though it is pretty much a condition of their professional registration that they should explain this stuff to you! Lesley
I had this problem earlier in the year Poet - my dentist used to prescribe and supply atibiotics but now he can't. I had to go and see my GP......but as i wasn't ill I just arranged a phone appointment instead and my GP was fine with that. Can you see your GP ?
