Emergency first aid - choking hen!

Recommended Posts

Yesterday Phoebe got a crust of toast stuck in her throat GNR:shock: She was gasping away and I was all on my own, and didn't know what to do. I tried to get it out but just ended up pushing it in further, and she was getting worse and worse and (appeared) to stop breathing :shock: So I managed to tip her upside down and shake vigorously under the wings and then there was a big splutter, and the toast lump catapulted across the garden. I was obviously a nervous wreck, but she just took a deep breath, shook herelf and went about her business as if nothing had happened  No toast from now on I think.

Well done you! Chickens don't have a gag reflex, so can't sick up anything that gets stuck. You did the right thing, how frightening for you though.

Feeding chooks bread is a point of discussion amongst most chook keepers as the high gluten content means that it can sometimes ball up in the crop and either block it or start to ferment. Personally, I steer clear of it.
