KateB
Hi all, After 2 years of searching, I finally managed to get my hands on some Orpingtons yesterday. They're quite young, not near point of lay yet but I don't mind waiting a little longer now I've got my two babies! However, I'm quite worried about one of them. The buff one is fine - seems like a perfectly healthy, young hen. They are in the same run as my other three hybrids but separate if you see what I mean so they can get used to each other slowly with fewer problems. However, I've also got a blue one who seems seriously under the weather this morning. She appeared fine at the breeders yesterday but I noticed that they smelt quite a lot on the way home but put it down to the fact that they've been living in a barn on a farm and not in a nice Eglu and run with aubiose etc! Today she looks quite scruffy, has her tail firmly down and hunched in and seems to be dropping her wings by her sides. However she's eating and drinking well. I've given her some poultry tonic, yoghurt and bokashi bran but she seems no brighter this afternoon. I've called the vet and am waiting for them to call me back as the vet was attending to an emergency but does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong or what else I could do? Phoned the breeder by the way and she said that all the other Orps are fine and to see how she goes. I don't want to take her back though because she's my girl now and I know what fate she'll meet if I take her back and indeed she is ill... dancing cloud
How is she today? She could just be very disorientated by her move?
KateB
Perhaps a little brighter - not sure... The vet called me back late last night and wants to see them both this morning just to check them over. Will report back later.

KateB
Well... I've been to the vets and it's not good news. She thinks they have some kind of chest infection and bacterial infection in their gut. She's given them both a jab of Baytril and given me some more to give them orally over the next few days. I've got to take one of them back tomorrow for her to see again and her temperature is so high and I've got to take one of my older hens with me too as she's started to sneeze. Not good at all. The vet doesn't know whether they'll make it. They're all at mum's now so they are separate from my other hens and have been pecking around the garden which I'm taking to be a good sign. The vet said to bring them inside this evening so that's what we shall do. Very upset - the breeder still wasn't interested - just hope they make it and my older hens do too.. Egluntyne
What a shame. Fingers crossed for them. I hope the breeder is going to pick up the tab.
