I never have but have always wiped the dirty eggs with a damp cloth but tonight there were two really dirty ones so I washed them which I know isn't a good idea and wanted to know whether anyone knew if egg washing solution stops bateria getting into the egg ? Sandychick
I haven't had many that are so mucky they need washing. As far as I understand it, washing them removes the natural protective coating that prevents the ingress of bacteria. So this only really effects their shelf life. Working on that theory it would be best to leave them until just before they are used. It would be perfectly ok to wash them then. The protective coating has already served its purpose when the egg is about to be cracked open!
mostin
If I have eggs that are really coated in poo then I wash them in hot water and write on them to be used straight away.
Egluntyne
If you wahs the eggs in warm water bacteria are less likely to enter. If you use cold, the insides of the egg shrink away from the shell and bacteria might possibly get in between the shell and the membranes. The secret is to be quick and dry the egg immediately. Sarah B
I know this sounds dim but I didn't realise it's not good to leave poo on the eggs? Sometimes Madras's are a bit 'skiddy'? I think it's more that she lays them in poo in the nest box rather than doing a poo while she's laying, I do try and keep it all clean. mostin
I don't worry if it's just a bit, but some of them were so coated that I knew when i broke the eggs for scrambled that I would get poo in with the egg into the cup, and I didn't fancy that. In those cases I wash them quickly under hot water then dry and label to use straight away.
