Whole chicken in a slow cooker

Recommended Posts

Does the chicken come out as good as an oven roast one? Is it also easier to then pick the meat off the carcass. If the answer is yes how do I cook it in the SC. Thanks

The main reason for asking is that I currently don't pick all the meat off the carcass which is why we don't have whole chickens very often. I know it's shameful of me

I don't have a slow cooker but I know what you mean about picking the meat off the carcass.

What I tend to do now is get most of the meat off, then just boil up the remaining bones etc with an onion, carrot & some celery, bay & thyme to make a stock, which I then strain.

It makes for wonderful soup when you add chopped veg & the chicken meat again, & you aren't wasting a bit.

I put whole chickens in my slow cooker, just put about 1/2 - 1"of water in the bottom and crumble up a stock cube then add the chicken.

Yes it does fall off the bone and if your like me and love the skin which is very bad for you the skin is yuck in the slowcooker, not crispy like in the oven so less calories!!

Give it a go! Mine will be going in at about 1pm today and out about 5pm....all cooked and tender

Thanks Sarah and Jo. I'm trying it out but hope I've not put it in too early as I put in on before I saw your reply Jo. Also, I've just put it resting on a sliced onion and put some butter on the top of the chicken. I'll report back after we've eaten it toinght.
