very noisy chook

Recommended Posts

Hi,

had my chickens for 9 weeks now. All well and oldest started laying last week. Yesterday we were out in the garden with them , and our laying chicken became very noisy, just like afluffy toy hen we had that would cluck if you pressed its wing. It was quite allarming. Is she OK or annoyed about something?

ours bok at most things - car doors, footballs that come over the garden fence from next door, cats, birds, aeroplanes..

I think some people are very lucky to have quiet chickens, I got cochins as they are reknowned to be quiet and mine are the loudest chickens out of my 4!

Mine go through phases of whether they announce to the world they've laid an egg, or just keep it to themselves.

I have one chook who ocassionally bok, boks before she lays, and another who might bok, bok after she lays. Sometimes when a queue forms for the nest box, the chook waiting in line will make it clear she needs to lay an egg. But then sometimes they go for weeks and I don't hear a peep out of them.

Sometimes they bok bok as an alarm call if they are scared but then usually more than one joins in.

I suspect your chook is getting used to laying eggs and wants to tell you.

Thanks,

feel happy that all is well with my noisy girl.Spoke to a fellow chicken keeper at work today who said her chooks make a lot of noise when they are pleased with themselves for laying. I also think Florence [the noisy one] wanted to lay her egg in the garden shed, but I had remoed her as I was worried about her hurting herself on bikes and various tools etc.As long as shes happy and well she can make as much noise as she likes. [hope the neighbours dont mind].

ta for the response :D

Mine are really noisy if they see anyone about - in a "give me treats NOW... RIGHT NOW!!!" tone. And after laying, they do like to tell us how clever they are.

I wouldn't worry about it, assuming your neighbours are far enough away/don't mind/can be convinced not to mind with eggs and "little jerry" charm!!!

Mine make a right racket after laying or if they think we're late with the mash or treats. Before we go to work we often give them some greens or broccoli to peck at, and if we're late with those the little monkeys get up onto the wall and make the filthiest row you've ever heard.

Once we forgot to open the pop-hole in the morning, so Maggie couldn't get back in to lay her egg. The little madam got up on the wall and made so much noise my other half thought she was being got by a fox! We went tearing out into the back garden to be greeted by a very angry, cross-legged chook who couldn't get up the ramp fast enough.

Egg on its way, cat in the garden, squirrel or nextdoor neighbour & they like to bok bok boooooooook! It's normal & I love it. Neighbours get used to it! I've got cockerels too remember!

Ditto to the above plus, "I hate the wheelbarrow, Oooh we can see the sparrow hawk, Look a hot air ballon" (we get these coming over quite often and it really freaks them out).

Plus - I heard a new noise from one of my very new girls today when I brought out some mealworms she sounded like a seagull!

Couldn't manage with a Cockerel though think my neighbours would draw a line at that.
