jill the potter
This morning, after four weeks of getting an egg every day before 8 am, Korma decided that she wasn't going to lay until nearly 12pm! She spent nearly an hour on the nest box (we were both waiting like expectant parents!!) and poor Tikka, who seems to have no idea what she is supposed to be doing, spent the whole time to-ing and fro-ing in and out of the eglu -almost as if she was keeping an eye on her 'friend' . We were hoping that she would get the hint of what she is supposed to be doing, but so far nothing!! Finally, the egg appeared and all was well but still only one! Hubby wants to know when Tikka will 'start earning her keep'!! I still find it amazing, you eat so many eggs and egg products, but until you keep chickens it doesn't really click, does it? Can't wait for a two egg day!!
mostin
It's amazing how precious eggs become once you know how much effort goes into laying them isn't it. Is your other girl crouching yet or eating any more?
jill the potter
No she's not crouching yet, and it's difficult to tell who eats the most, between them they get through a large cup and a half of layers pellets most days and they free range for about 4/5 hours a day. Really great to watch them to day scratching around in a pile of leaves which my OH had swept up - which if course is now no longer a pile!! Actually today we've not had an egg at all. Probably just slowing down as they are now spending almost 15 hours a day in the eglu!!! They certainly love their sleep!!!
mostin
I find my girls often miss a day if they have layed late the day before, I'm sure she'll be back on track tomorrow. If you look at my sig you can see that I got Dolly and Shirley as POL on the same day but they started to lay months apart . In fact it was Dollys 1st egg today . They are just like teenage girls and mature in their own time , at least they don't throw tantrums .
jill the potter
Korma is back on track. Had an egg from her by 8 am as usual. Must have been just a blip over the weekend. Although I told OH I thought it was his fault for giving them treats in the morning - corn on the cob and grapes!!! - and they'd not had enough layers pellets!!! To think a couple of months ago he was really not up for getting chooks!!!! - Tikka still hasn't go the hint though - I suppose patience...and all that
mostin
That all sounds familiar, my OH is always making comments about freeloaders going in the pot etc. but he's always around when it's treat feeding time
Alfred
hmm yes - mentioned to my boyfriend that I was going to start giving the chickens some hot porridge every morning to see if it would get them laying again, and he said if i made HIM some porridge every morning then HE might lay an egg!! mostin
Yes I find OH's can get jealous of the girls very easily . I mix allsorts into the porridge mix for my girls inc. garlic powder. The first time I made it OH walked into the kitchen and then only just made it to the sink. For some reason the smell of the hot porridge makes him sick . Another reason he can add to his list to have a go at my girls . It hasn't stopped me making them porridge though .
jill the potter
Could I ask, what is the garlic powder for? - and is it the sort you put in Indian gooking? (sorry to be dense!) I made the girls some porridge before they went to bed today (at ten to four!!!!!!) I've never seen anything eaten so quickly and greedily!! mostin
It's equine garlic powder from the farm shop, comes in a bucket! will probably last me 10 years. As well as the usual health benefits associated with garlic it also stops your girls poos from smelling as bad . More of a self preservation act really. jill the potter
Lots more crouching from Tikka over the last couple of days - so much so that I've actually managed to pick her up for a cuddle! this is the first time I've been able to do this since we got her in early September! Not sure if she really liked it though I've also noticed that she's not as timid as she was and has grown quite a lot, think she must have been quite a bit younger than Korma when we got them both. Still hoping for a two egg day soon
