Old Speckled Hen
Somebody .... I think it was Christian .... I can't find the post .... said he put out wood ash for his chooks. Does anybody else do that and do you think you could include coal ash? I have a small burner in the kitchen and tend to add some coal as the wood burns too quickly. Would love to give this to the chooks, having picked out all the unburnt bits, of course.
sandyhas3chucks
i wouldn't think the chemials in coal ash would be good for them, it's not good for the garden I do know only wood ash!
Christian
Somebody .... I think it was Christian .... I can't find the post .... said he put out wood ash for his chooks. It was me, but I can't find the post either. Coal ash is fine. I found the info on a herbal site for chicken ailments. http://www.kingbirdfarm.com/Layerhealthcompendium.pdf I guess that coal is just carbon, so is fine. Mine have been dust bathing on it for a year or so.
Old Speckled Hen
Wonderful, Christian .... Thanks I had hoped that would be the case and emptied the ashes into their dust bath today and they loved it.
helenmb
Thanks for the update Christian and I have been wondering about ash for my girls as my neighbour has lots going spare. I assume that they don't try and eat it and if they do its not harmful?
Christian
I assume that they don't try and eat it and if they do its not harmful? Mine have never tried to eat it Helen. I had hoped that would be the case and emptied the ashes into their dust bath today and they loved it. Mine follow me around when the 'ash bucket' comes out. There is always a mad dash to be first in
