madchickenlady
Unfortunately, I had to return my gold star ranger and white star today My pekin girls hated them with a vengence, and everyone was getting very stressed. My top hen, Mabel, was hanging on to the rangers neck feathers for grim death yesterday, and I had to seperate them completely (I was letting them free range) Even when confined to the run, the hybrids were being terrorised by my usually very placid girls. The ranger was very stressed and losing feathers Lovely bird, and I would have liked to have kept her. The white star, on the other hand, was well up for a fight and could quite easily have injured one of my chicks. She was trying to attack through the mesh Extremely flighty, she escaped when I opened the coop to check on her. Took two hours to recapture her All in all, I know I've made the right decision in returning them, but I'm a bit sad too
Egluntyne
That is a shame. Separate accommodation for a while might possibly have helped. Opinions abut mixing hybrids and bantams vary. It works for some and not for others.
madchickenlady
I did have seperate accomodation for them, but to be honest it wasn't going to be enough long term, and I don't have a big enough garden for two permanent chook residences. I suspect that if I'd had two rangers, it would have worked out, but the white star was very, very skittish. I considered taking the white star back and exchanging her, but felt it would be unfair on both rangers, as then they would have been new to each other and the bantams IYSWIM. My top hen was making such a racket, I was just waiting for a neighbour to knock on the door Now they have gone, my little flock are happily pottering around the garden, and peace once again reigns. I've learnt my lesson, and if I do get more chooks, they will be pekins. At least then they'll all be evenly matched
Plum
Really disapointing for you . Chin up. Pleased your other girls have recovered. Cheer yourself up by resourcing batams ready for when you feel up to trying again.
abwsco
Oh what a shame How long had you been trying to integrate them for.
