Protecting cube from cold north wind

Recommended Posts

Bit worried. Really cold weather is forcast for this weekend with wind from the north and chill factor taking temperature to -10 according to OH. I was wondering what others do to protect the girls from really cold draughts in the cube when its like this.

There are a lot of ventilation holes in the cube.

I don't think that you should have to do anything to keep the wind out apart from shutting the cube door at night.

Since I paid a large ( to me) amount of money for my cube I believe it does what it says on the tin- keeps my hens warm in the winter time & cool in summer, due to its double plastic layer.

I would be very surprised & upset if Omlet advised me that I need to cover it up in the winter months.

Why not contact Johannes directly & see what he says?

( Am I considered an old hand now, even though I only got my cube in the summer?:lol: )

I've had a cube since July 2007 - so all through last winter. I did nothing extra and as two of my girls liked sitting on the top of the ladder star gazing I often didn't shut the door either!! They were perfectly alright - I figure if sparrows can keep warm out of a cube, my girls should be able to in it.

I only covered my eglu a couple of times last year during heavy snow (mainly so I could get in to collect the eggs without s"Ooops, word censored!"ing the snow off the eglu!). They don't really need it though - the eglu is designed to keep them cosy and they have each other's duvets to cuddle up with. Remember that their body temperature is a few degrees higher than ours too, so what feels freezing to us probably doesn't to them :) .
