michele
Hello, One of my hens is very poorly today. She is about 18 months old and is a hybrid Calder Ranger. I tried to let them out this morning and she stayed in the "bedroom" which is most unusual. Eventually she managed to make her way out to the run, but is just lying down and her eyes seem to be closed a lot of the time. She can hardly move at all and is not interested in food or water. I have now put her in a box with some food and water and she has stayed very still. I watched her for a while and she eventually did a very watery poo and woke up a bit but is now still again. Up until now she has been incredibly healthy, with a bright comb and overall looking very healthy - except that she has not laid an egg for a year !! I would appreciate any advice. chelsea
sorry to hear of your poorly girl, has she been wormed recently? Have you checked for lice/any beasties?
michele
Hello Chelsea. She doesn't seem to have worms or lice, and my other 3 are healthy and running about as normal. This is one of the reasons I have separated her from the others. She seems to have been getting fatter recently - don't know if this could be an indication of anything. Daphne
It sounds to me like she needs to see the vet asap. I don't know what it could be but hens that go lethargic in such a dramatic way usually have something that needs professional treatment. I was going to say maybe she had egg peritonitis but then I read she isn't laying. I assume she is separate from the flock - if so, and if she is still awake, try syringing water into her. She needs to keep her fluid intake up or give her some sloppy food if no pipette/syringe to hand. Also, whatever her favourite treat is then see if she'll take a little. Good luck with her. Egluntyne
I agree, she needs to see a vet. The fact that you think she seems to be getting fatter might suggest that she has peritonitis, which will need treating. In the meantime, keep her warm and try to get her to take fluids. Ain't Nobody Here
Just come on for some news too . Is she OK?
michele
I am afraid that Barbarossa did not get to see the vet. Sadly she died in the night. We will give her a nice funeral when my son gets home from school.
Ain't Nobody Here
Oh no, I'm so sorry . She was obviously very poorly so doesn't sound like you could have done much .
Daphne
I am sorry to hear that. Unfortunately they do just get things and expire with very little warning and in many cases there's nothing anybody can do about it either. Vet friends tell me chickens are one of the hardest creatures to diagnose and treat. I hope the funeral helps. It always does for us.
