RIP Blanche

Recommended Posts

One of our two bantams, Blanche, has just died. She was a Sussex bantam and the cutest one we have.

I noticed this morning that she was having difficulty breathing and was weezing and it sounded like she had a lot of liquid in her lungs. My wife took her to the vet who tried for 1/2 an hour to save her, but unfortunately she didn't make it.

Her trachea was blocked by a yellow puss that could have been either the ramains of our pansies (our girls like eating them), or more likely a fungal infection or mucus.

Anyway, it was very upsetting for the wife, and Blanche did not have a peaceful exit because of the efforts to save her.

Chickens really can go downhill quickly. It was only an hour and a bit from seeing he in distress to her dying at the vets.

Fortunately we have 3 left (a Miss Pepperpot, a Welsummer and an as yet, unidentified bantam!), but we are getting upset by chickens dying on us as our gingernut ranger is not long departed with an impacted crop.
