what do you think

Recommended Posts

I take my little boy to the local childrens centre which is loccated where my daughter gose to school.Today the lady who runs it said we are getting a ginipig in a hutch well l tryed to put the idea of a eglu on her and also l said why not 2 and she said that there was only 1 left.I really dont like the idea of just 1 animal on its own she said that the children would be company for it but l feel its not fair and its playing on my mind.We have 2 ginipigs in an eglu and just keeping 1 on its own seems like a bad idea.At weekend it would be on its own and there are foxes around so it would be scared all alone.Or am l being silly and over sensetive.

I think you are right. Whilst the children will be company of sorts for a guinea pig, people are not a substitute for other giunea pigs. They are naturally very sociable animals and anyone who had seen happy g-pigs squeaking to each other would never deliberately keep one on its own.

BTW At the weekend who is going to shut the eglu door in the evening and open in the morning? This is essential for their safety and to keep him/ her warm enough in winter!! There are some people on this forum who aren't convinced about keeping g-pigs outside in winter regardless of an eglu or not....never mind with the door open

I agree with you. You're not being over sensitive. Guinea's shouldn't be on their own, they naturally live in small groups and get lonely without their own kind. It doesn't sound like she has done much research. Perhaps it's worth pointing her in the direction of a good guinea web site?

If the children are young and unsupervised a guinea can be easily hurt. I thought this kind of thing had gone out of fashion as it was difficult to mantain care at weekends and holidays? Ah well....
