Tweety
hi Katie and welcome to the wonderful world of chickens! What type of chickens are you getting? If ex battery, they will be used to layers mash/meal so you will have to start them on that. If from a breeder, I would ask what type of feed they are used to and carry on with that. Basically there are two choices, layers mash/meal and layers pellets - they are both made from the same ingredients but the pellets are much less messy than the mash. If given the choice, mine much prefer the mash though.
C&T
Mine also prefer the mash. The pellets they used to throw all over the place - great for encouraging rats - so a lot was wasted and they didn't really eat that much. I switched to mash and now they eat a lot more, and the food is not thrown everywhere. Everyone happy! But I am sure that all chickens are unique in what they like and dislike... Just have to find what works for you - and your chucks!
Angels4
I have 2 girls that like mash and 2 girls that eat pellets so I use both. The man where I buy my feed says that pellets are more nutritionally complete as they are getting all they need. However with mash they tend to just pick out the bits they like. He likened it to a child and candy My ladies are quite messy eaters and as such I felt ALOT of food was going to waste so I devised a catch all below the grub. I will post pictures a bit later in the day.
The Dogmother
I alternate mine as they like both, so one sack of meal, then when that runs out I go over to pellets. I use a gravity feeder as I have 12 birds and they flick any food out of the grubs. In fact, I traded my grubs in for glugs and put extra food in them too.
