Egg Colour

Recommended Posts

Hi,

We (my wife Jenny) and I are new to chickens and collected 4 birds just over 4 weeks ago, we have;

1 Skyline

1 Hiline

1 Silver Nick

1 Black Tail

The problem we have is that 2 of these should lay brown eggs, 1 bluey green and 1 rusty red, so we were suprised when the first egg we got last week was white.

We have now had 10 white eggs and this morning we got 1 white and 1 brown.

I beleive that the chicken laying the white eggs is the Silver Nick which should be laying brown eggs.

Does anyone have any ideas on this.

We actually don't care too much and in fact it works quite well as we can now tell which birds are laying. We are childminders and have found that the children just love going in to the gsrden to watch them even though the lawn is now a muddy mess.

Regards

Ian

I'm not familiar with the names of some of your breeds - I think the silver nick is the same as an amber star (if it is supposed to lay brown eggs) but there are some varieties of white chicken that lay white or pale cream eggs. Does she have red ears or white? If white, then she is your white egg layer :D

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies, the silver nick is a white bird but has red ears. She is the most obvious to be doing the laying. As I mentioned though we are quite pleased that they are not brown eggs as now we have 4 different colour eggs. A the moment we are only getting 2 but we are expecting the black tail to start laying within the next couple of weeks and than lastly the Skyline.

Our silver nick (Miss Pink) has now laid 15 eggs on consecutive days and although I don't think they taste any different the colour of the yolk is a superb deep yellow.

Regards

Ian
