Otter
We had a massive egg on Friday - 89gs, then noticed on Saturday that she had lost LOTs of feathers arround her bottom and a sore scabby patch somewhat south of her vent. We dusted both hens with red mite powder and thoroughly cleaned the eglu. This morning we have a TINY egg - 50p size. Not much food has been eaten since friday - I added verm-ex and spice to the layers pellets. Any advice?
Ain't Nobody Here
Sounds a bit like pecking . Any signs that she's being picked on by her pal? Don't know if the huge then tiny eggs could have anything to do with it . Might just be a coincidence?
sandyhas3chucks
perhaps she had a little prolapse after the big one & they started pecking her???
The Dogmother
You don't say whether she is young or not. Youngsters aften have irregular laying cycles, whch would explain the egg query. As for the scabby bum; it's hard to tell without seeing her, but you've treated her for lice, which would have been my first move too. Otter
Thanks. She ate more yesterday, no fresh blood and a normal egg. It's good to know that I took the actions that you would have. I will make sure the eglu is kept extra clean and keep up the spice/verm ex etc. Let's hope the feathers/sore sort them selves out soon!
