Ladder for cube

Recommended Posts

I am not sure how easy it would be to attach the Omlet ladder to the Eglu, as it won't have the necessary fittings.

I don't actually like the Omlet ladder: it looks good, but is not all that practical, as young or old hens can't use it. If you are putting your Eglu up high, you might be better getting a wooden ramp.

The Cube ladder looks cute, but it is not very practical: think carefully before buying one. I don't think the hens themselves would choose it. And old and young hens just can't cope.

I imagine that a plastic ladder is more likely to get slippery in freezing weather than the wooden one. (I can't open my eggport door this morning: it is frozen on!)

I have been very happy with my wooden cube ramps (which are attached on top of the ladders and reach the ground). They look quite nice too. You can have them made to the size you need, and they will even drill holes exactly where you want them if you give clear instructions.

I find that they don't like my ladder very much (when coming out the use the edges as a slide and when going up they just flap a lot as they can't work out that they just need to put one foot in front of the other to use it  ), my DH made up a ramp for them to use too which they are much more comfortable with which takes them onto a platform which the cube ladder then goes up from. I agree that it might be better to make one rather than buy one as it is designed to fit round the front of the cube so its a easy fit. Again we did ours a bit different as the cube is outside the run and the ladder attaches to the frame of the run so I can pull the cube away for cleaning etc.

I have added a photo of the little platform that is attached to - its a bit difficult to see but underneath the platform there is another bit of the ladder which would normally go underneath the cube so you would either have to cut that off or make it fit to a table like we did - hope that makes sense.

Ooh, you can see it a bit better here behind Pearl!

Here is the inspiration I got for making the ramp (DH is in the process of building a mezzanine for my girlies this Christmas too!) which is one of Mrs Berties pictures.

I hope this helps.
