Well I am a little bit confused as repeatly my girls have kicked out the wood shavings out of the house. Yesterday I just put some shredded paper down and they didn't bother but today they dragged all the straw out of the nesting box and into the run. Am I doing something wrong or is it just normal behaviour?

One of mine did this...she laid her first egg the next day!! Coincidence? I'm not sure. I'll be interested to see other replies

ours have always done this with whatever we put in the eglu - all 6 of them although the ex-batts do it more often

Mine somtimes do this and then somtimes they chuck it all out the eglu and then sort through the stuff they have chucked out and select certain bits (of straw particually) and put them back in.... i don't think i'll ever understand them

It is nesting behaviour. There will be some eggs soon.

 

Look out for their combs and wattles developing and reddening markedly, and the hens crouching as you approach too.

that's now happening with Polly - she has all her lovely new feathers so I'm hoping for an egg soon... she and Geraldine have been through an on/off moult for months - I think this is their 2nd year - is that normal?
