how deep a bed for asparagus

Recommended Posts

Asparagus roots are pretty deep (up to 4' apparently!!!)

So if the beds arent on soil you may have an issue...

the crowns should be about 8-10" deep, as you need to ensure that when cuitting the spears below surface you are clear of the crown and root structure

I prefers a lighter soil.

Make sure that you buy good healthy crowns, we bought some cheaper ones from Wyevale and they didn't really come to much.

Make sure that the area in which they are to be planted is free from perenial weeds, we have had dreadful problems with bindweed in ours.

The first season you leave it alone , second season only pick a few spears then by the third season you can pick for about a month.

If you love asparagus it is well worth growing, the spears when freshly picked are really sweet and only take about 2-3 minutes to steam, or can be eaten raw, but even by the next morning they are much tougher and take more like 6 minutes to steam.
