comb not growing

Recommended Posts

Hi

We bought our eglu and 3 hens about a month and a half ago, they've all settled in and 2 PPGNR have started laying even in this cold weather! However, the last one GNR has a very very small comb and it doesn't seemed to have grown at all since we've had her. It's also very pale almost yellow.

She hasn't lost her appetite but her poo's have been a brown runny colour. Has anyone got any advice?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Kelly

Welcome to the forum.

She could be a little younger than the others. The lengthening days may spur her on.

The fact that she is eating is a good sign.

Might be worth worming her re the runny poos. Also. I would cut out any treats, just give hr water, pellets, with bokashi bran added, which will firm up the poos.

Avipro, a probiotic supplement is useful too...or a dollop of probiotic yoghurt.

See how she goes, and if there is no improvement, or the squitts increase, it might be worth a trip to the vet.

One of my hens had this and I was told she was anameic. I don't have much info about this as my hen had lots of other things wrong aswell as that.

I think what Egluntine said is the best thing to do as she always gives fantastic advice.

Hope your hens comb improves soon.

Just wanted to let you know that she passed away, we're not sure what was wrong with her, but it sounds very similar to the problem your chicken had. It's a bit concerning as we got our chickens around the same time as you so I just hope that there hasn't been a disease that has affected a batch of chickens that Omlet have sent out.

Thanks for the advice anyway

Hi

Im sorry to hear this.

Have you spoken to Omlet about this yet? I spoke to them as I was concerned by this.

They however were not and felt that this was the first time it happened!! They should be aware as people are purchasing from them because of their reputation!!!

I am left with 2 chicks now and they seem to be okay, but have been advised not to add another due to the pecking order.

Please let me know how you get on.

Kind Regards

I have sent an email to Omlet informing them of the situation and stating that i didn't think it was an isolated incident. I will you let you know the outcome.

I was going to get another one as i was not aware there was a problem. And from what i've read they should sort their own pecking order by themselves.

Hi

I heard back from Omlet today, they didn't mention anything about the fact that this seemed to have happened more than once but they are going to refund us for the chicken. They recommended that we get two more rather than one as if we added one it would get bullied. So we're going to get another two from our local farm! Hopefully, they will all be healthy from now on!

Regards

Hi Kelly

They seemed to think its a one off but they are so calm about it Im not sure if it is!!

Im glad you have decided to get two as this would be better for the pecking order, and would be fun having 4.

We wanted to add another two as this would be easier for the pecking order, but means we needed to get an extra metre run in which we didn't want to do. Im still not sure what we will do. I think eventually we will do the same and replace them from somewhere more local.

Good Luck keep me posted on the update of your new hens.

Kind Regards

Emma
