Could you eat an elephant?

Recommended Posts

I watched the programme last night and am having a crisis of conscience. The bit where the horse was being led into the abbatoir. Not because it was a horse it was more just seeing it struggle. Something just clicked in my brain I suppose.

I have a freezer full of meat which I'm not going to waste. I think I'll just try and introduce more vegetarian dishes into our diet gradually and take it from there. I'm not even going to make any promises, just try and do it quietly and gradually.

I had an interesting chat with a vegan lady on facebook last night and she said a few things which made me think too.

I thought it was a very thought provoking programme to be honest.

Seeing something similar 22 years ago turned me into a vegetarian Poet,.....it was a programme on Spanish abattoirs on a foreign tv channel - I turned instantly & surprised myself when I stuck to it.

You were brave to watch

They didnt show the dog bit in detail did they?

I was bitten by a horse once. I wonder if they consider eating humans a bit wonky?

It's funny how even on here we're not too critical of chicken eaters (many of us are, including me - I separate my pets from ones 'grown' for food), but we find it shiveringly wrong to eat dog or cat.

There is an unusual meat butcher near me who does kangaroo, wilderbeest and a heap of other exotic meat-stuffs. I don't think he does dog though. Out of interest, do you think it is obtainable anywhere in the UK, or would the horror of the masses put off the shopkeepers?

Right now, I prefer my hens to my dog, who is living under my feet and doing my head in to the extent that I may look up some stir fry recipes for him soon...

(No of course not. Not this week anyway.)

The whole idea of it upsets me and I'm getting worse as I get older. I've met so many people who have worked in the food industry, big companies (of course), and their treatment of the animals to be slaughtered makes me feel quite ill. I have no problem with meat eaters, I used to be one, but the thought of these terrified creatures stressing out and panicking together with the complete lack of respect from the humans handling them fills me with complete horror and the image stays with me for some time afterwards. I feel sick to my stomach just posting this comment.

there were some upsetting scenes, yes. More the treatment/handling of the dogs before-hand :? Dogs' eyes are very expressive, much more so than say a chicken, so it was hard to watch that bit in particular.
