Gashead
Hi Yay got our first egg today. We have omlet chickens. A pepperpot and a gingernut. Do these chickens lay different coloured eggs? Just wondering because we are not sure which one of the girls the egg belongs to. As this is the first egg I'm not sure what is normal but the egg looks small to me. Certainly smaller than a commercial egg. I've read about weighing eggs on the forums. What's the average weight of an egg from omlet chickens? Thanks in advance
Seagazer
Congratulations on your first egg Its very exciting isn't it. I have a Pepperpot who lays dark brown eggs and 2 Gingernuts - one lays light brown and the other lays dark brown - just to make it tricky. I can usually tell who laid what as they lay different shapes. The dark egg laying Gingernut lays torpedo shaped eggs whilst the Pepperpot is more normal egg shape. Their eggs usually are small to begin with and get bigger with time. Hope this helps.
Purplemaniacs
Congratulations on your first egg Our Pepperpot lays longer thinner eggs than our Gingernut (sadly she has not laid for a few months now) used to. The Gingernut's were more rounded. The Pepperpots eggs are now high 60 to 70g, she lays most days but with the shorter days is now missing one day every ten days or so but the following day we find an early morning egg in the eglu when we let them out first thing in the morning. Gashead
Hi Thanks for you r replies. Another question, I think hens legs change colour when they start to lay. I think I read that somewhere. One hen now has yellow legs and the other pale white-ish legs. Which colour means they are in lay? Also we cooked the egg this morning (poached). I've never seen such a yellow yolk. Amazing colour. Looking forward to many more!
