Are Chickens ok with peanuts?

Recommended Posts

Ive got a peanut hanger for the wild birds but the only place i can hang it is from the shed, this will be over the chickens enclosure so bits of nut will be falling in there. Is it ok for the chucks to pick them up or should i try to find a new spot?? Just a bit worried about them choking.

Thanks, Ian

I have loads of feeders, niger seed, peanuts, sunflower hearts and fat squares outside and the hens love to graze underneath them and chase the little birds away - it has not done them any harm and they have been at it since I got the hens - they have laid all winter and so I presume the little more protein from the peanuts does not harm them - possibly helped them to lay but I do not have it over the hen run. I just hope it does not harm them!

Sorry I didn't mean to worry you, like I say I worry about all sorts - even crossing the road! I'm sure they'll be fine :D

Maybe try a tray under the feeder like this or could maybe make one out of an ice cream tub or something similar. Then only a few bits would fall into their run (Which would be fine to be hoovered up occasionally) but then the rest can be picked up by other wildbirds or cleaned out by you. (You may need to punch a drainage hole if you make one, as the weather at the moment isn't exactly dry)
