Hens in my garden.

Recommended Posts

After months of research, saving and preparation, and encouragment from you lovely people I finally have hens in my garden!!!!! :D We picked our coop up from a lovely man in Norfolk yesterday and my fantastic hubby put it together and laid a slab run this morning. That left the afternoon free for ............ buying hens from the farm down the road of course!!!!! I can't believe it, they are 3 lovely big goldlines and have made themselves at home, they even put themselves to bed in the coop as soon as dusk approached - aren't they clever? I'm sure I will now be on a very steep learning curve but as long as I have the Omlet forum I know I'll be OK!! :D

I didn't realise they sold garlic powder there! I wrote a lsit of bare essentials and was running round the shop like a woman possessed,so I didn't look round that carefully! :) I'm going back in the next few days to have a really good look around and buy the extra bits and pieces that I will probably need over the next few weeks.

I bought the last one of the garlic powder in the small size (unless you get a bag)

I always forget things and then pop back in, I get my dog food there as well, so between them and the chickens I seem to be forever there.

did you get aubiose bedding for the run floor or choose something else??

if you come at 2pm tomorrow you can help me pick my two new girls

I got Aubiose to use in the coop (and some to put in the run) but the base of the run is on wood chip on top of slabs. This is a sort of temporary arrangement, we're planning on a walk in run later in the year - we'll see how it goes. I would have loved to help you choose chooks but I work till 3pm, then have to do the school run. Not sure how much help I would've been though, I didn't realise hens were so big  and spent the afternoon uttering things such as "ooh look, they walk like chickens" I'll get the hang eventually!!! :D I'm still so made up, I don't think I'll sleep much tonight!!!! :D Thanks ANH, so excited will go "super nova" soon :D

I have done nothing for the past few weeks except try to think of names for hens. I had a short list of about 100!!!!! For some completely unknow reason these 3 came to me in a flash while I was unloading the dishwasher last night. They weren't on the shortlist and the more I thought about them the more I liked them :D What more can I say? :D:D

HI glad you have hens now. however I must say they are very addictive so be warned, your three little girls will quickly become more. When we got our fist we went to get 3, and came home with 5, and today we got another 3, so we have 8 of them now.

dont expect to get anything done for the next few weeks, as all youll be doing is "hen watching".

hope you enjoy them.

Congratulations and enjoy your hens....

It's totally addictive. I started with 3 girls, then added 2 more (in separate runs). For short periods each day they all tootle around the garden together - and the eggs are lovely! Be careful; you will find yourself thinking 'chicken' all the time.

Thank goodness for this site where we can talk obsessively about our hens, safe in the knowledge that others are interested, too!
