Super Glug... they don't get it.

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone.

I have a cube with 3 ginhernuts in. I've been using the Super Glug at the height suggested by the chap that delivered it.

They can use it - I've seen them, though one chooses to fly up and sit on top of it rather than go under it...

The thing is the water lever doesn't really ever go down and I see them use it once in a blue moon. When the weather was freezing I kept taking then bowls of water as I can't reach the glug to change it. The bowls were almost empty in 10 mins flat! Now I keep taking them containers of water as I am worried they aren't getting enough from the glug.

Peggy's comb is now standing proud after drooping for months - she was probably dehydrated poor love.

Anyone elses girls just not get it??

Mine used it but like yours drank a lot when I gave them some in a bowl. So I put it low so they could drink out of the top and they kept perching on it and filling it with dirt. Then one of the nipples broke or disappeared when it was frozen so I've got them a bell drinker now and feel they can get water easily, I had to put it on bricks to stop them flicking bedding in it.

Lots of people use super glugs and their chickens are fine. I shouldn't have messed about. :D

we tried a super glug, albeit for a very short time and went back to the normal glug as it appear that ours couldnt work it out.

there is lots of good advice on here though of how to get yours to use it if you want to persevere with it. things from tapping it with a stick to to get the girls attention and also to make it drip a bit.

Sorry I cant be of more help.

I got a lovely purple super glug just last week and my three got it more or less sraight away with a little direction.

They are in an eglu and had a normal glug previoulsy but I was forever changing the water cos they kept flicking bedding, sand, food and poo :vom: into it. I was throwing away ACV and vern-x liquid away too so it was costly.

I put the super glug into the eglu run and removed the normal glug. I then sat on my garden kneeler by the open run door and flicked the nipples so water came out, I also had meal worms on me to use as reward.

Now Stella being the nosey little lady that she is was straight in there and and drinking. OSH took about five mins to discover that H2O came from the lovely silver nipples but also that nipping mummy;s figures is MUCH MORE FUN!

Gin who is a lot shyer than the other two (OH says slow, I say shy) and she wouldn`t come near the big purple thing so I left them shut in the run for the morning and spyed from upstairs window after an hour or so all three were having a good drink.

I would of thought if your chickens were thirsty and they know that water comes out of the nipples on the super glug they would use it.

Thanks all...

I have been saying 'if they're thirsty they'll use it' but I am not so sure!

I also have a 'shy' lady, Doris. I worry she doesn't get it at all! I might try and buy an glug container as a back up. I prefer those for food too so may see if anyone wants to sell me two!

Thanks for the help.

Mine didn't get it either and I was worried about them dehydrating as I read they do drink a lot. I bought them a normal glug and they love it. As long as the water is changed daily (if there is any left), it won't matter that bits of straw, paper, aubiose etc gets into it. I am sure a lot of chooks love the super glug but I think it's a lottery as to whether they do or not.

Mine are a bit slow and couldn't work out the superglug, so we replaced it with a bell drinker hung from the roof of the run.

I've put the SG back in now, in an effort to teach them.... but it's so heavy with water in it that I can't hook it up high enough when stretching awkwardly through the run door!!
