jomaxsmith
Big Zee my Coral doesn't look well today. She's standing around with her head tucked in and closing her eyes. her tail is erect though. I've checked her over and her crop feels soft, her vent is clean and I can't see any evidence of external parasites. Her eyes and nostrils are clear and her eyes seem bright. She hadn't laid for a couple of days but did lay an egg this morning. She has been laying most days. I've just given them some flubenvet mixed in mashed potato and she did eat that quite normally but has now gone back to her hunched stance. I wormed them under 3 months ago but started them on Flubenvet again today in case worms is the problem. She just did a squitty poo which had a strand of clear mucus in it (sorry). Again leading me to think worms. Anyone think of anything else it could be? I guess I just need to wait and see if the Flubenvet does the trick Jo UPDATE: She started to perk up and eat yesterday afternoon, then this morning there was a soft egg broken on the bars. She has a history of softies and this one was obviously making her feel pretty rotten. Edited January 21, 2009 by Guest
chelsea
it could be worms.... the hunching is a sign. You've done what I would have suggested - giving her a check over (that's what I would have done). I would keep a close eye on her the next couple of days, make sure she continues to eat & drink etc. If she still hunches and doesnt look her normal self maybe have a word or pop to the vet just for an opinion. Hens hide illness so well that if it wasnt worms it could possibly be something else. Lets just hope it was your initial thought of worms. jomaxsmith
Thanks Chelsea, see was eating this afternoon and seemed more normal so hopefully she's on the mend and it was just one of those things. I've had a bit of a day of it today - sick chicken, Youngest Son off school with a cold, strange (expensive) noises coming from under my car and now I think Eldest Son has worms and possibly impetigo. Ain't Nobody Here
Oh dear, not a good day for you . Hope Zee recovers with some TLC (and Flubenvet!) and your non-feathered family are better soon too .
sandyhas3chucks
It was probably the softee. she got rid of the rest & has perked up.
dancing cloud
Excellent news that she's better! My Joy-hen always looks at death's door when she's got a softie coming - I'm sure she does it just to worry me
