Cyber Chook
Hello, experienced chicken keepers out there, has anyone used Harka Mectin treatment liquid to protect against red mite, lice and worms? I've just bought some, because I liked the idea of just having to apply two drops to the necks of my chickens once every 3 months, to protect against all of the above, rather than using other more fiddly and frequent methods. However, just to clarify, I will also be worming them regularly, by the way, and checking their various bits regularly too. And putting Diatom in their feed, Cube, and dust bath, just for good measure. Oh, and maybe the odd shake of louse powder in the dust bath and nest box too I wondered if anyone who's used Harka Mectin ("Spot On Endectocide containing ivermectin 0.35% w/v") has any thoughts on it, whether they found it effective and so on? Snowy
Never heard of it, but just looked it up. It's the same active ingredients as others on here have found to be very effective (ivermectin). I'm sure Claret swears by it.
Gamebird
Harka Mectin has the same active ingredient (ivermectin) as Xeno 200 which has often been recommended on this forum but is not licenced for poultry in the UK. See this thread for more information. I find it very effective against external and internal parasites. I use it every 4 months.
Cyber Chook
Thanks guys, that's useful. It was mentioned by Regency Poultry, when I had a conversation with them while ordering my supplies of Poultry Shield, Diatom etc. I was saying how my chooks don't take kindly to being puffed with louse powder, and when they described how the ivermectin works and is applied I thought it sounded good, so I added it to my order. They're always helpful and friendly, I've found Caroline
Egluntyne
Xeno 200 is Ivermectin 0.02%. I would urge absolute caution about using a 0.35% solution on your chickens without first speaking to a vet. You could seriously overdose them and the larger dose could impact upon the recommended egg wihdrawal time. The product is *not licensed for use on poultry in UK
Snowy
Just noticed Regency Poultry sell a 0.8% ivermectin treatment and recommend a 14 day egg withdrawal period. It says now available without a vet prescription. I also found out last weekend that Regency Poultry have been bought out by Merrydale Poultry and is now being run by Karen from Merrydale. Egluntyne
It is available without a vet's prescription....but for caged and aviary birds and rabbits guinea pigs etc. Strictly speaking it should only be used on poultry with a vets prescription. Cyber Chook
Oh, hmmm, now that's interesting. I'm glad I asked here before going ahead with it. I'll hold off dosing them and try to find out a bit more about this. I'll get back to the forum when I've got some more information.
