How long after prolapse recovery can she have some layers pe

Recommended Posts

Hi there

I have had my gals since August last year - it's not been easy with one dying from a bad crop, a fox getting another one and one being a real bully! Anyway I am down to just two gals now - Silkie and Debs! Silkie has had a prolapse (which had an egg in it which I removed. Amazingly, after a mix of Prep H and honey it is back in!!! Hoorah!! She is a beautiful Sussex Star and I did not want to lose her. She has only been fed corn for the last 2 weeks since this all started and has been kept away (except at night) from the other hen. Has anyone please got any experience re when I can try her on the pellets again - ie how long after this recovery can she lay? I don't want to mess it up now, not after all this good work has got her back to shape! HELP!!

Hello Julianne and welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you have been having a rough time :(

I would say that two weeks off pellets would be long enough. The corn doesn't provide them with enough nutrients, so putting her back on pellets will build her up again, but might start her laying. 2 weeks of rest is great, so hopefully she won't prolapse again.

Will pop this into the chicken clinic for you :D

Heh Christian

Thx so much for your advice - I was not sure how long to keep her on corn. I will let her do her thing tomorrow which means having pellets and being with her mate Debs! Will keep you posted - hopefully she can lay without another disaster?
