Cate in NZ
sorry about the flurry of new postings but I'm a bit of a gardening novice, and in previous years when things have gone wrong I've rarely worked out why, and given up. This year thanks to all the good advice I'm feeling really enthused. I can't wait to have some more produce ripen. So far I've got broad beans, rhubarb and strawberries, raspberries, tayberries & redcurrants are ripening up nicely and the greenhouse is groaning. Lots of good stuff outside too But my query is about my cucumbers, I've only got a couple of plants because it's the first time I've grown them, so I thought I'd try a couple to begin with. But some of the older leaves have little white patches on them. The fruits are tiny, but definately there, and the plants are growing. I'm watering daily, but in the evening, which I know isn't ideal, but quite honestly I feel busy enough in the mornings as it is, am watering isn't for me! But is the white that they're going mouldy from remaining damp overnight, or is it likely to be something else? I feed x1 a week with tomato food, could it be that? Too much/ not enough? Thanks for any advice
Lesley
Ours have always got white patchy leaves and they are watered in the morning. The outdoor courgettes also have it.It is mildew and won't do much harm. I just pick off the lower leaves. We are just going to pick our first cucumber
SarahJo
Glad Lesley replied before me ... Kate and I have had mouldy growing Courgettes, prob due to humidity. My sweet peas develop bad mould towards the end of the season .. but have not grown cucumbers yet, so could not answer "professionally" your query. However .. someone said thir cucs are having that "veined" skin deveoping this year .... Lesley will know what I am talking about.

Mrs Frugal
Don't talk to me about cucumbers! Out of 6, I'm down to 3 rather pathetic looking plants. First year for me too and probably the last!! No flowers on mine yet and the leaves do look a bit white and patchy. Hope yours pick up! Hope mine do too!!
SarahJo
Err ... oh dear . No, what I mean is the cucumbers develop white scar like lines on the skin ....... Lesley, being the gardening queen, obviously has never experienced this .... it has just been mentioned to me quite alot recently though ..... I'm not too sure why , pass a glass quick, my exit from the forum is iminent. I blame it all on indecorous endemics myself ....

Lesley
I have to confess Sarah that i don't go in the polytunnel very often as it houses some strange spiders Carl just said there was a cucumber ready to pick and there it was - complete with it's scars I've never heard of them. SarahJo
Don't blame you for not going into the polytunnel .... esp if there are spiders involved. . I am very , that your cucumber had "scars" .... sorry , not being mean .. just makes me look less silly, for once I was wittering about something that does exist .... not just in my mind. . No flowers on mine yet and the leaves do look a bit white and patchy. Hope yours pick up! Hope mine do too!! what plants do you have? Mr fowl said he heard a talk on R4 in which the expert said that F1 females are the best croppers and no trouble so that's what I bought and we've just had our first two for dinner tonight - they were on the small side! Delicious though
fowlbird
those white scars are usually harmless 0 dunno what causes them - I thought they were left by marauding slugs - just peel the cucumber and it's be fine
