We have had our chickens for 1 week today, and i thought i would give an update on how its been so far. got then saturday and to be honest on monday i thought i had made a terrible mistake, 12 chickens that just sat in the house poohing! Oh my god what have i done was all i could think...........but now couldn't be happier. yes they still pooh lots but they respond when you call them and they also talk to you and eat out of your hand . I think we are all settled in a routine now altough i'm still learning. But i wanted to say thanks for advice in my other thread.

thank you . I am now but did think i had made a terrible mistake and didn't know how to tell my husband after he built me such a great hen house and run........but panic over, we alll love them!

I don't think anything can quite prepare you for the quantity of poo produced

We've only got the two and were amazed at the poo generated from that, I can't imagine (well I can! lol) the amount of poo your girls present you with.

 

I'm glad you're all settling in and things are going so well.

yes 12 lots of pooh did depress me when they wouldn't come outside into the run....i couldnt see beyond the pooh..........but to all the newbie chicken owners like me it gets much better you get clucks when you talk to them and when you really lucky eggs(not that i have yet) not just pooh! so stick in there!

Twelve chickens must produce an amazing amount of poo . I'm glad you've come to terms with it though .

 

Do you give them bokashi bran? It really helps to firm up the poos and makes cleaning out a lot easier . Garlic powder reduces the pong too .

We have been giving them layers mash, and the occasional treat (told to limit treats until they lay eggs) ie corn and dried mealworm but i will try the garlic powder.....thank you
