Hats for gnomes or peasants

Recommended Posts

There's a thread in the nesting box about Joanna Lumley's pink hat linking to some lovely knitted 'gnome' hats. Not wanting to splash out, and preferring to make this year where possible, I had a go at making one from a red felt/fleece blanket I have been snipping away at for crafting purposes.

I've ended up with a serf bonnet, somewhere between a medieval coif and a gnome hat. I'll post pics of it on a human head later today when the OH is back from work and can take some. It's very cosy as it totally covers the ears and sides of the neck, and secures under the chin. It can be hand-sewn from scratch in under an hour.

Edit: Here's sock monkey wearing it, although it makes him look like Kylie in the Can't Get You Out Of My Head video because it's massive on him.

And the full serf-chic look:

I made two snoods, one a bit longer than the other, so that with one I could wear it round my neck and pull it up to my mouth or nose, biker-style, should it get really cold, and so that with the other one, I could gather-tie the top into a bobble and make another kind of hat - I'm wearing that under the serf/gnome hat in the second pic. And then I made some fingerless glovettes. The OH says it's a great look with which to take baked goods to grandmother. The OH is also secretly jealous.

I didn't use a pattern. I did it freehand. Very easy to make a pattern though. You just draw the shape of one of those chain-mail helmets at about the same size as an old hat (so a 'bobble hat' shape, but continue it down to the bottom of your neck) along these lines:

Cut two of them out of your fabric, start sewing about halfway up, going over the top, then stopping about halfway down, then pinning a pair of corners back, little dutch girl style, then using the remaining corners to wrap round your neck (add the press stud to those bits).

Clear as mud?! :?
