nutterly_uts Posted January 31, 2009 Share Posted January 31, 2009 I am trying to plan my next chicken house, but I am having a total and utter brain block. I currently have 2 silkie bantams, a mix breed bantam and a light sussex chicken in an eglu with extra 1m run which is fine. Everyone is getting on, happy days I want to upgrade to a cube, but make my own run. Now is the maximum number of Chickens I could put in a cube still only 10 depending on breed? If so, if I then added another 2 silkies bantams, and either a cochin or orp, and something that laid dark brown eggs, and something that lays green/blue eggs, would they all fit, and what size run would I need as a minimum? What about if I forget the cochin/orp? What about if i add my eglu in too as another house? Thanks in advance. laurmurf Posted January 31, 2009 Share Posted January 31, 2009 I have 8 in my cube including an orp - I could easily fit another 4 in there at night and am thinking of Brahmas - so big girls! It's not really the sleeping space, it's the run space that matters about numbers... oh and nest boxes! Mine queue up to lay in my cube's nest box - very impatiently - and will not lay 2 at a time, even though they would fit someone who's got a walk in run will be able to give you better advice but I would have thought if you have a big run which includes a cube and possibly an eglu then you could easily manage 12 or more! good luck! Egluntyne Posted January 31, 2009 Share Posted January 31, 2009 I have all sixteen of my girls in the cube. I Had an Eglu in the run too, but they refused to use it...all piling in to the cube. BeckyBoo Posted January 31, 2009 Share Posted January 31, 2009 Well, I have 13 sleeping in my cube every night, 14 if I stuff Dave in as well! Plenty of room but obviously they have a big walk in run as nothing I could get from Omlet could accomodate that many hens! Mine are a mixture of breeds but I have one BIG buff orpington in there as well as a speckledy, plus two adult bantams, a bantam babe and three other youngsters.
