craftyhunnypie
After getting a freebie booklet on this with my knitting magazine, I want to make lots of them. They are very cute Japanese little toys / dolls. I sat last night trying my best to learn crochet. I think I might have sussed it. Heres to a knotty mess! Are they easy Emma, as a craft I mean They certainly look adorable & would make lovely little keyrings etc! Sha x
craftyhunnypie
They seem quite easy if you know how to double crochet, increase & decrease. But I've not made my first one yet. I'm waiting for a book to arrive on the craft. Emma.x
Guest
Ooooh how cute I can't crochet though! Or knit come to think of it.
Lesley
So,........ is it just crochet?
craftyhunnypie
Yes it is just double crochet in a ring. But until I master the 'magic circle ' to start it off I can't make what I want to make. Some however start with 2 chain, then 6 double crochet into 2nd chain from hook. Then 2 double crochet into each of those 6 stitches etc etc. They make like little basket type structures, that turn to balls as you crochet away. They sound so easy, but I'm struggling to master this magic circle / ring. Grrrrrrrrr I have an idea for the secret easter bunny thing. I hope my book comes today. bluekarin
I'm watching a tutorial on YouTube part one and part two. And she is making a chick I think I might have a go at this myself and my ED looks keen to try too. The penguin looks so cute especially using the fluffy wool. craftyhunnypie
That's the tutorial I keep watching over & over, but I can't keep up! If you master the 'magic circle' on another you tube video - please tell me an easier way to do it! Emma.x
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
OMG I love this stuff! Can't do it for toffee but it's great! I have a bunny and a lovebird pattern if anyone's interested. They were on the lion yarn blog. PM and I'll mail them to you.
craftyhunnypie
I've mastered the ring & made a messy egg shape! Time for more practice! My book still hasn't arrived - I'm getting mad now! I also tried making a granny square last night, it looked more like a granny star! I am also very good at the granny star. lol Also found this, with a little tweeking could be a lovely chick. Karen

McChook
These are fabulous! I can't believe I haven't seen them before I've had a quick scout around the internet and there are lots of free patterns out there - methinks I'll have to have a go
A chickychickychick-ENN!!
I've just bought a book because they are too cute and covetable, all those amigururururumi critters. I'm not very good at needley stuff though. I can knit in straight lines in plain stitch, and that's it, and I can't crochet at all yet! craftyhunnypie
I'm so pleased. Tonight I managed a granny square using this as a guide. http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/granny_square.htm But I still can't quite do amigurami balls, they end up a bit knotty, holey & mousey shaped! My book still hasn't come. I complained to the seller & they say it has been sent out. I'll give it until say Wednesday & then.....negative feedback - they aren't getting high scores anyway from me for dispatch time. I paid for it last weekend..even parcel post doesn't take that long! Happy crocheting everyone! Emma.x

craftyhunnypie
Xan I just say that when an American says double crochet, they mean trebles! When they say single crochet, they mean double crochet. Stick to that & you will do the granny square no problem! I've also made a little heart mat! A chickychickychick-ENN!!
Some beginners' advice from Diana Price of mygurumi: Most people use an E hook (3.5mm) and yarn that's supposed for this needle thickness. I use a cotton yarn called catania from schachenmayr, it is a very typical yarn to make potholders from. But you could use about any yarn you like, only keep in mind to have a hook that's matching gauge given on the yarn, if not a little smaller. Most items I see that are a little out of shape used hooks that were too big for the yarn they used. Don't use a hook that's too small, you will only break your fingers. Some people even use thread and very tiny hooks and th get tiny amigurumi of course. If you stick to the yarn and E hook your dolls will be about 5-7 inches high, depending on the pattern of yourse. So you can change the size of your doll with the yarn you use.
